Evaluation Question 2

Q2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main social groups that our film represents is gender and age:

Gender:

Female

Strong

Represented by our strong female protagonist.

Her strength is shown through:
-Her behaviour of going out to find her sister and her determination and extent she goes to, to do so
-Comparison to vulnerable boyfriend (emphasising her strength)

-Iconography:

Caring nature

We noticed that the main issue with strong female characters within the genres we are working in, is that they tend to lose their femininity, or become cold and heartless.
We wanted to defy this representation by making her fall in love with the boyfriend.

Victim

This is represented by the missing sister, and the relative female issues in the world of today that we see within the film- such as Kidnapping and Trafficking.
The fact that Rose's sister was taken with no choice at all, and used for her sexuality represents women as a victim of their own gender, being used for men's and other peoples needs. The fact that Rose has to go out and find her, emphasises her sisters helplessness.

Male

Vulnerable

The Boyfriend in our film represents men as vulnerable, and easily manipulated through:

  • His oblivious-ness to Rose's lies and deception
  • His Innocence,  represented by the way in which Rose is using him and by the way in which it is emphasised how much he loves her.
  • Iconography:

Powerful, dominant, villain

Father

The other main male representation we see in our film is the boyfriends father.
Although we do not see him in the opening sequence, it probes into his contrasting dominant character to the boyfriend by the speech we hear:
perfect on Make A Gif

"Everything is going to be fine"
"You don't know my father everything has to be perfect with him"
This introduces his father as a very powerful man.  The way in which 'everything HAS to be perfect with him' represents a sense of the boyfriends fear towards him, and the control and power the dad strives for. This power is also established by the role he plays in the film. The fact he is the man in charge of Rose's sister placement in the Brothel represents what kind of a man he really is, and represents men in a evil manner.

Age:

Wordle: responsibility

What is represented about age?

Rose embarks on a huge task, all in the name of her sister. The fact that Rose is the older sister, represents the responsibility of people of an older age to people of a younger age. Her devotion and care for her sister is represented in the way she:

-Lies
She Lies to her 'boyfriend' and his father in order to find out where her sister is.
-Becomes involved in danger
She becomes involved in the world of trafficking and kidnapping. She has been  playing games with very dangerous people such as the boyfriends dad, and if her lying is revealed she could be left in a very dangerous situation.
-Iconography
We see her stare at the picture of her sister. This represents how much she misses her.

This responsibility and care of people of an older age to people of a younger age that is represented in our film is influenced by Kill Bill.

'The Bride' in Kill Bill goes out to seek her revenge in name of her lost kid. It becomes her responsibility, and her care and devotion towards her kid leads her to face dangerous situations such as her own death.
