Group Reflections: Film Opening Test Shoot

Lighting: atmosphere
We had a real problem with lighting on the shoot. We used dimmer lighting, which allowed us to change the intensity of the lighting on our shoot. This was in order to create the seductive and mysterious atmosphere within the opening sequence, which we would establish using the mood lighting. However the dimmers on the lighting became a bit of a problem. When we would set the dimmers to a certain intensity/ level, throughout the period of time we were filming they would suddenly increase or decrease in intensity. This meant from shot to shot our lighting differed, which affected our continuity and causing our sequence to lack consistency.

Also considering lighting, one of our lights would not turn on, and one couldn't tilt. This effected how we could light our shots, having to work around the problems we faced by lighting the shots with what we had, not necessarily how we had planned them to be lit.

Continuity
While filing our test shoot, we realised our shoot board was missing a lot of shots that were necessary

in order for the sequence to make sense. For example; separate shots of Yssy reaching for items she was going to use, in order for the audience to understand where items had come from, rather than them appearing from no-where. For this reason we realised our shoot board needed to be altered, and a lot more shots needed to be included.
Set and props

A lot of problems we faced when it came to shooting our sequence, involved making sure things like the lighting were not in the shot. This emphasises how we needed to plan the set to each shot at a greater extent, in order to make sure lighting and other things we did not want in shot were not in shot. It also became clear we had to figure out a lot of the props. For example the perfume bottle. The perfume bottle we had planned to use ran out half way through, meaning we had to use a different perfume bottle of a different colour and shape half way through. Not only did this affect continuity but the perfume bottle we changed to use half way through did not spray as well, meaning our close up shots of the spray on Yssy's neck, didn't reach the full potential that they could have.

Shot types
While filming our sequence we realised a lot of the shot types we had previously decided needed changing. We realised certain mid-shots should really be close ups, and certain angles also needed altering. This is because we could finally put the images/ concepts/ ideas we had in our heads into perspective of our location, as both me and Yssy had never been in Shani's room before. Now we had seen the layout, set-up and size of the room, where certain shots shot be filmed from and therefore the shot type and angle that the shot would require became clear, and it became evident that certain shots we had planned previously were not possible to create in terms of our location and set.

Dialogue
While filming our test shoot it became clear when we actually acted out the dialogue we had planned that it did not flow, and when re-enacted from paper it was an unrealistic dialogue that we needed to work on. We realised the length of the gaps of speech was slightly unsettling as the conversation did not flow, and even though we wanted pauses in-between shots, we had to many at too great a length.
